Ski pants
Men's ski pants are a key element of sports equipment that provides protection and comfort while skiing or snowboarding. They bear the brunt of the load during falls and active movements, so it is worth paying special attention to the choice of this clothing. Properly selected ski pants will help you maintain your health and get maximum pleasure from winter sports.
Men's ski pants: skiing or snowboarding?
There are some differences between ski pants and snowboard pants . Snowboard pants are usually wider and looser, have reinforced areas to protect against mechanical stress, a rich design with a large number of pockets, drawstrings and fasteners. Such details not only play a decorative role, but also have practical significance, for example, they help to adjust the clothes to the figure and reduce the need to carry a backpack.
Men's ski pants have a more restrained design and are made from modern membrane materials. They provide maximum protection from moisture and cold without unnecessary details.
Insulated or all-purpose ski pants?
Men's ski pants perform two main functions:
- protect from moisture and cold;
- remove excess heat and moisture to the outside.
Insulated pants are perfect for leisurely skiing when you don't plan on doing any intense physical activity. They provide excellent warmth and comfort in cold weather.
Universal pants without additional lining are more often chosen by professional freeriders. They provide reliable protection against moisture, but do not overheat. For additional insulation, it is recommended to use thermal underwear.
Important aspects when choosing ski pants:
- Material. Pants are made of special membrane fabrics that are able to wick moisture from the inside and prevent it from passing through to the outside. The quality of the material is determined by its waterproofness and vapor permeability.
- Cut. Pants should have an anatomical cut so as not to restrict movement. It is important that you can sit down, stand up and bend your legs freely without feeling discomfort.
- Inner cuffs. These fit snugly against the boots, preventing snow from getting inside. Tight patches on the legs are also needed to protect the fabric from rubbing against the edges of the skis.
- Seams: All seams should be taped with waterproof tape, which creates a barrier against moisture.
- Ventilation: Pants should have ventilation holes to help remove excess heat and moisture. These are usually built into the leg seams and are further secured with zippers or Velcro.
- Zippers. All zippers must be waterproof and equipped with windproof strips.
- Fixation on the belt. The belt should be elastic and not restrict movement. A tight fixation can cause discomfort during prolonged skiing.
Water resistance and vapor permeability
When choosing ski pants, it is important to pay attention to the level of waterproofness (in millimeters) and vapor permeability (in grams per square meter per day). The minimum vapor permeability level is 5,000 g/(m²⋅day) and the maximum is 30,000 g/(m²⋅day) .
Recommendations:
- For active skiing, choose pants with vapor permeability in the range of 15,000 - 30,000 g/(m²⋅day) .
- For leisurely descents and walks, 5000 g/(m²⋅day) will be enough.
- For average mobility, pants with a vapor permeability of 10,000 – 15,000 g/(m²⋅day) are suitable.
